The historic Churchill Downs was officially opened in 1875. It was estimated that 10,000 people showed up to watch the Downs’ first racing event. Churchill Downs received its name after Clark’s (the originator of the Kentucky Derby, the one and only Clark from the Lewis and Clark expedition) uncles John and Henry Churchill. They leased out the eighty acres of land where Churchill’s Downs resides at this very day.
It was a meager horse track initially housing a club house, grandstand, porters lodge and six stables from the beginning to now sporting the twin spires atop the grandstand that were designed by architect Joseph Dominic Baldez in 1895. From its meager 80 acres, Churchill Downs now sprawls across 147 acres seating up to 51,000 visitors. The seating limitations have not stopped the Kentucky Derby from drawing in over 165,000 people though with standing room only. The once singular clubhouse became a building housing 79 luxury suites and a new clubhouse was erected housing a 36-foot mural of all the 96 jockeys who had won the Kentucky Derby from 1874 to 2004 done by Pierre Bellocq.
The Kentucky Derby Museum is also located at Churchill Downs with memorabilia from Churchill Downs beginning, exhibits on the history of training thoroughbred horses and the history of horseracing. Also housed in the museum is a 360-movie screen that runs a documentary about the Kentucky Derby called “The Greatest Race”.
